Description

The pages in this remarkable resource, Arm Action, Arm Path, and the Perfect Pitch: Building a Million-Dollar Arm, offer a perfect blend of medical science, exercise science, and coaching science. The book clarifies conventional wisdom about pitching and quantifies three-dimensional motion-analysis research on the mechanics of a pitcher’s delivery. House and Thorburn wrote this book with the hope that it will become the science-based guide to pitching health and performance for baseball coaches, parents, and athletes at all competitive levels with chapters covering the setup, lift-off, stride and momentum, release-point efficiency, and looking ahead. The book includes a 42-minute DVD covering fitness on the field, lower-body exercises, upper-body exercises, and abdominal exercises. The DVD wraps everything up with chapters on applicable skills and drills.

Biography
  • Tom House, considered by many to be the "father of modern pitching mechanics," is the co-founder of the National Pitching Association. The NPA is renowned for its efforts involving three-dimensional analysis of human movement, the physical preparation to support this movement, the metabolic preparation to fuel human activity, and the necessary mental and emotional make-up to successfully achieve the highest level of performance possible. Tom pitched on the professional level from 1967 to 1979 for the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, and Seattle Mariners. He has coached since 1980 for the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, and Chiba Lotte Marines (Japan), as well as in Latin America. On the amateur level, Tom is an information and instruction coordinator for 12 baseball academies across the United States and Canada. He directly accesses 8,000-10,000 players, coaches, and parents per year in clinic settings. He travels the world as an international consultant, performance analyst, and sports psychologist. Tom is currently an advisor with the American Sports Medicine Institute and the Titleist Performance Institute, was a co-founder of the Pitch It Forward Foundation, and has paneled seminars for the American College of Sports Medicine.

  • Doug Thorburn is an ambitious student of baseball research and player development, blending his professional experience in coaching, scouting, performance analysis, baseball operations, and sports-business management. He arrived at the National Pitching Association in 2005 as an intern from the inaugural class of the Sports M.B.A. program at San Diego State University. Since then, he has taken the lead role with high-speed motion analysis and the NPA model for pitching biomechanics. Thorburn’s subjective experience in the bullpen and his thorough knowledge of the objective tools involved in motion analysis provide him with an impeccable skill set for his role at the NPA. His mastery of his craft enables him to help guide the research that is being conducted at the NPA with an eye toward identifying the optimal training methodology and achieving maximum functional results. Prior to joining the NPA and earning his M.B.A., Doug worked with the front office of the Sacramento River Cats, and earned a B.S. in cognitive neuropsychology from the University of California San Diego.
